Project #5 - Action Scripts and Editing Your Photos

For today, here is what you'll be doing in class:

1. Go through your Lightroom collection of photos.  Choose your 10 favorite photos from ANY assignment we've had thus far.

2. Drag these 10 photos into Photoshop.

3. In Photoshop, go up to "Window",  "Actions".  This will open up a window that looks like the one below.  These are Action Scripts.  Expand this newly opened window by dragging the bottom of it down to expose all of your Action Scripts.  (I recommend trying the "Instagram Action Scripts")

4. Action Scripts are a bundle of multiple photo edits that occur with just a push of a button.   This one, to be precise.

5.  With your photo open, click on any of the Action Scripts window and then click the "Play" button at the bottom of that window to set in motion the Action Scripts edits.  NOTE: Don't ever click on any of the Action Scripts that are under the Action Script, or underneath the drop down arrow within that Action Scripts.  That will only enable one of the edits within that Action Script.  You want ALL of the edits to occur in the Action Script.  Circled below are the Action Scripts.  Underneath them are the individual edits.

6. Experiment with these Action Scripts.  If you don't like them, just go to "File", "Revert" and it will revert your photo back to it's original self.

7. You can also use anything under "Image", or "Filter" to edit your photos.  TAKE THE TIME TO LEARN AND EXPERIMENT WITH ACTION SCRIPTS AND OTHER EDITING TOOLS TODAY.  SEE WHAT WORKS AND WHAT DOESN'T UNTIL YOU FIND THE PERFECT FIT FOR EACH PHOTO!

8.  When you are done, put all 10 photos onto a 8" x 11" Contact Sheet with 2 Columns and 5 Rows and save it in a .jpg format.

Naming Convention: _actionscripts

Due Date: By the End of Class Thursday, October 31st.

NOTE: Most of you already have it, but if you don't find the "Instagram Action Script" in Photoshop, go to my Public folder on the staff server.  You will find it there.  Drag it to your Desktop and simply double click on it.  It will automatically load and open in Photoshop.

Project #4 - Take 10 Photos a Day for a Week of Your Interests Using the 6 Rules of Photographic Composition

Project

Beginning today, Monday October 21st, you will take 10 pictures a day, for 1 week, totaling 70 pictures.

This assignment is designed to get you thinking about subjects & concepts you enjoy to photograph, so consult your Notes from the beginning of the semester and use the list of "Interests" under the "MAKE YOUR MISTAKES MORE BOLDLY" Notes Page you created.   Hopefully this will help you to begin to brainstorm your ideas for you could take photos of for this assignment, creating more interesting photos that you could use for your AP portfolio.

Every photo that you take has to reflect any interest, fondness, love, like, or passion of yours, outside of photography.  EACH photo MUST utilize any one of the 6 Rules of Photographic Composition. YOU CAN ONLY TAKE 1 PHOTO OF ANY 1 OBJECT OR SUBJECT! NO REPEATS!

Forgot about what those rules are?  Click on the links below.

Project:

For this assignment you will need to have 28 unique photographs that demonstrate competency in all of the 14 Elements and Principles of Design.  You will be taking 2 solid photo examples of each of the following:

Elements of Design

Line - is a mark on a surface that describes a shape or outline. It can create texture and can be thick and thin.  Types of line can include actual, implied, vertical, horizontal, diagonal and contour lines.

Color - refers to specific hues and has 3 properties, Chroma, Intensity and Value.  The color wheel is a way of showing the chromatic scale in a circle using all the colors made with the primary triad.  Complimentary pairs can produce dull and neutral color.

Texture - is about surface quality either tactile or visual. Texture can be real or implied by different uses of media. It is the degree of roughness or smoothness in objects.

Shape - is a 2-dimensional line with no form or thickness. Shapes are flat and can be grouped into two categories, geometric and organic.

Form - is a 3-dimensional object having volume and thickness. It is the illusion of a 3-D effect that can be implied with the use of light and shading techniques. Form can be viewed from many angles.

Value - is the degree of light and dark in a design. It is the contrast between black and white and all the tones in between. Value can be used with color as well as black and white. Contrast is the extreme changes between values.

Space - A 3-dimensional volume that can be empty or filled with objects.  It has width, height, and depth.

Principles of Compositional Design

The principles of design are the recipe for a good work of art. The principles combine the elements to create an aesthetic placement of things that will produce a good design.

Emphasis - is an area that first attracts attention in a composition. This area is more important when compared to the other objects or elements in a composition.  This can be by contrast of values, more colors, and placement in the format.

Balance - is a feeling of visual equality in shape, form, value, color, etc.  Balance can be symmetrical or evenly balanced or asymmetrical and un-evenly balanced.  Objects, values, colors, textures, shapes, forms, etc., can be used in creating a balance in a composition.

Contrast - offers some change in value creating a visual discord in a composition. Contrast shows the difference between shapes and can be used as a background to bring objects out and forward in a design. It can also be used to create an area of emphasis.

Movement - is a visual flow through the composition. It can be the suggestion of motion in a design as you move from object to object by way of placement and position.  Directional movement can be created with a value pattern. It is with the placement of dark and light areas that you can move your attention through the format.

Rhythm - is a movement in which some elements recurs regularly. Like a dance it will have a flow of objects that will seem to be like the beat of music.

Pattern - is the planned or random repetition that occurs in nature and in art.

Unity - is the feeling of harmony between all parts of the artwork creating a sense of completeness.

All 28 photos are due by the completion of class on Thursday, October 17th.

Your grade for this assignment will be based on several factors:
  • Completion of each image turned in on a contact sheet name _ep

  • Turned in on time (formative)
  • The quality and creativity of your 28 best images
  • Each photos must represent the Element or Principle
  • All 28 photos MUST be properly exposed
